Suspended Access Equipment Chamber
The Suspended Access Equipment (SAE) Chamber of the IWH Professional Body represents the practitioners involved in working at height by using temporary suspended platforms or permanently installed building maintenance access equipment as the primary means of positioning and fall protection.
The IWH Professional Body recognises the following high-risk skills programmes within the Suspended Access Scaffold industry, and therefore license the competent and experienced persons accordingly:
IWH PB APPROVED LICENSE TO OPERATE specializing as a:

TEMPORARY SUSPENDED
ACCESS PLATFORM USER/OPERATOR
The registered TSP User/Operator is skilled in performing a specific job in elevated positions on a suspended platform. The person knows how to safely operate such suspended platforms in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act’s Construction Regulations 2014 and Driven Machinery Regulations 2015
Criteria for Obtaining Recognition
To be recognised with the IWH Prof Body as a TSP USER/OPERATOR the licensee must comply with the following minimum requirements:
Academic Component
Operator to have the following:
- Must have completed an IWH PB approved Non-NQF Skills Programme. Outcomes of this programme have been developed by the Falsework industry and are available for use by all approved IWH PB recognised training providers.
- Must also have completed the IWH PB Board-Assessment
(If the person has not completed this training programme but have proof of experience, the person can also complete the IWH PB’s RPL assessment, and if found competent, the person will be licensed accordingly).
(Training and assessment must be conducted by a SETA ETQA/QCTO accredited and IWH Professional Body recognised training provider)
Other criteria
- Must be in possession of a current, valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Must renew his/her license every three years to proof that he/she is still able to perform the work competently and safely
Criteria for re-licensing
- Must still be medically fit for the work to be done safely
- Proof of practical workplace experience
- Attendance of CPD workshop/activity
- IWH Re-assessment

TEMPORARY SUSPENDED
PLATFORM ERECTOR
The person responsible for the erection of temporary suspended platforms has to be able to describe the components of the platform and roof support system. He/she will be able to assemble (and dismantle) the TSP from its major constituent parts in a safe and efficient way at a work site. He/she will also be able to relocate the TSP under supervision when necessary and to understand that safety must be an overriding concern for his/her own and others safety for the duration of the erection, dismantling and moving phases.
Criteria for Obtaining Recognition
To be recognised with the IWH Prof Body as a TSP Erector, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements:
Academic Component
Operator to have the following:
- Must have completed an IWH PB approved Non-NQF Programme. Outcomes of this programme have been developed by the SAE industry and are available for use by all approved IWH PB recognised training providers.
- Must also have completed the IWH PB Board-Assessment
(If the person has not completed this Unit Standard/s but have proof of experience, the person can also complete the IWH PB’s RPL assessment, and if found competent, the person will be licensed accordingly).
(Training and assessment must be conducted by a SETA ETQA/QCTO accredited and IWH Professional Body recognised training provider)
Other criteria
- The Shutter Hand must have been registered previously as an Assistant Shutter Hand
- Must complete at least 6 months workplace experience after his theoretical training as per the above.
- Must be in possession of a current, valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Must renew his/her license every three years to proof that he/she is still able to perform the work competently and safely

- Must still be medically fit for the work to be done safely

PLATFORM ERECTION
SUPERVISOR
A registered Temporary Suspended Platform Erection Supervisor is a professional responsible for satisfying the requirements of Construction Regulation 17 (8) and 17(9) The Temporary Suspended Platform Erection Supervisor ensures the safe erection of temporary suspended platforms and the initial training of operators in compliance with these regulations.
The purpose of the Temporary Suspended Platform Erection Supervisor designation is to recognize this person as a professional in its own realm of activities and ensure the safe use of temporary suspended platforms by employers/contractors involved in construction, maintenance, cleaning industries.
Criteria for Obtaining Recognition
To be recognised with the IWH Prof Body as a TSP Erection Supervisor, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements:
Academic Component
Supervisor to have the following:
- Unit Standard 243271: Supervise, inspect and control the use of Temporary Suspended Platforms (Lev 4; 8 cred)
- Must also have completed the IWH PB Board-Assessment
(If the person has not completed this Unit Standard/s but have proof of experience, the person can also complete the IWH PB’s RPL assessment, and if found competent, the person will be licensed accordingly).

Other criteria
- The SAE Supervisor must have been registered previously as a SAE Erector
- Must be in possession of a current, valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Must renew his/her license every three years to proof that he/she is still able to perform the work competently and safely
