DESIGNATION - MOBILE ELEVATING WORKS PLATFORMS CHAMBERS

DESIGNATION

“Professional designation” means a title or status conferred by a professional body in recognition of a person’s expertise and/or right to practice in an occupational field. Registration against a designation is valid for a period of 3 years, after which the practitioner has to apply for re-registration.

 

 

The following designations for the MEWP industry have been registered with SAQA:

CRITERIA FOR OBTAINING THE PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION

For the Professional Designation of MEWP Practitioner to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements:

Academic Component

Complete the following NQF registered unit standards:

Unit Standard 243272: Operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) (Level 2)

Unit Standards 229998: Explain and perform fall arrest techniques when working at height (Level 2)

OR

IWH Prof Body NNQF 201303: Basic Fall Prevention Programme for MEWP Practitioners

Practical/Workplace Experience

Must have completed minimum 100 logged hours of relevant MEWP Operating workplace experience.

Board Examination/Competency Assessment

Must successfully complete the MEWP Practitioner Professional Competency Assessment (This assessment can all so be used as an RPL assessment against the designation).

Must be in possession of a current, valid medical certificate

CRITERIA FOR RETAINING THE PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION

In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements:

 

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Members are required to provide proof to the IWH Prof Body of their CPD activities.

Members are required to accumulate 25 CPD points in a 3 year period by completing a range of recognized activities such as:

Compulsory (20 CPD points)

Current Medical Certificate = 5 CPD points

2 CPD points per 100 relevant workplace hours to a max of 10 CPD points (Total 500 hours), logged within the preceding 12 months prior to re-registration

IWH PB approved MEWP Practitioner Re-Assessment = 5 CPD points

Choose from any of the below (min 5 CPD points)

Membership with an international association / body for the work at height or MEWP industry = 2 CPD Points

Subscription to industry related trade magazine = 2 CPD Points (max)

Attendance of Work at Height conferences = 2 CPD Points

Committee member of an association / body nationally or internationally = 2 CPD Points

Registered with the IWH Professional Body as a constituent assessor / moderator = 5 CDP Points

Author of book / published article relating to work at height = 2 CPD Points

Evidence of CPD for a specific occupation = 2 CPD Points (e.g. electrician, welder etc)

Workshop on work ethics = 2 CPD points

Minimum 1 Workshop / Seminar on work at height and / or MEWPs = 2 CPD Points

Refresher MEWP Practitioner Training programme = 5 CPD points

MEWP SAFETY AND TRANSPORT CONTROLLER

A registered MEWP Safety and Transport Controller is a professional responsible for the safe transport and operations of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) under his supervision. This equipment will typically be machines such as a Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) which can include machines such as Telescopic and Articulating Boom Lifts, Slab and Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts, Stock-pickers, Aerial Work Platforms, Trailer or Truck-mounted Boom Lifts, Mini Access Lifts and Run-abouts.

 

The MEWP Safety and Transport Controller have to be able to plan, organize and control the transportation of MEWPs and ensure adherence to safety during the operation of MEWPs. This includes:

 

Identifying and determining correct means of transport for mobile elevated working platforms.

Conducting pre-trip planning.

Loading and off-loading mobile equipment onto vehicle.

Conducting tie-down and release procedures.

Making use of safe operating procedures and practices of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms.

Correcting and safe placing of people, tools and equipment on to Mobile Elevating Work Platforms.

Overseeing shut down procedures.

 

Building and maintaining operator`s capacity.

CRITERIA FOR OBTAINING THE PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION

For the Professional Designation of MEWP Safety and Transport Controller to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements:

 

Academic Component

Complete the following NQF registered unit standards:

 

Unit Standard 243272: Operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) (Level 2)

Unit Standard 243276: Manage the transportation of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWP) (Level 4)

Unit Standard 243273: Monitor and control the safety and operations of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (Level 4)

And proof of completing

 

First Aid Level 1

Practical/Workplace Experience

Must have completed minimum 250 hours of relevant MEWP operating and controlling of MEWPs workplace experience.

Board Examination/Competency Assessment

Must successfully complete the IWH BP approved MEWP Safety and Transport Controller Professional Competency Assessment. (This assessment can all so be used as an RPL assessment against the designation).

SPECIALISED ACCESS EQUIPMENT DEMONSTRATOR

A registered Specialised Access Equipment Demonstrator is a professional responsible for demonstrating the safe and effective use of a piece of Specialized Access Equipment to a future user/operator where such user will be using such equipment or machines to work at height on an occasional or regular basis. This equipment will typically be machines such as a Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) which can include machines such as Telescopic and Articulating Boom Lifts, Slab and Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts, Stock-pickers, Aerial Work Platforms, Trailer or Truck-mounted Boom Lifts, Truck-Mounted Aerial Platforms, Mini Access Lifts and Run-abouts.

For the Professional Designation of Specialised Access Equipment Demonstrator to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements:

 

Academic Component

Complete the following NQF registered unit standards:

 

Unit Standard 243272: Operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) (Level 2)

Unit Standard 229998: Explain and perform fall arrest techniques when working at height (Level 1)

Unit Standard 117877: Perform one-to-one training on the job (Level 3)

Practical/Workplace Experience

Must have completed minimum 250 hours of relevant MEWP Operating workplace experience.

 

Board Examination/Competency Assessment

Must successfully complete the IWH PB approved Specialised Access Equipment Demonstrator Professional Competency Assessment. (This assessment can all so be used as an RPL assessment against the designation).

 

Must be in possession of a current, valid medical certificate.

NON DESIGNATIONS

The following practitioners for the MEWP industry will also get special recognition by the IWH Professional Body. The recognition will be in the format of an Operators CARD, stating that this person is recognised by the IWH Prof Body as an Operator. The following Operators will be recognised:

T-MEWP Operator

The MEWP Operator, although not recognised as a professional against a designation, is a person who:

 

Completed the  US 243272: Operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP)

Has a current and valid medical certificate

The T-MEWP Operator, although not recognised as a professional against a designation, is a person who:

 

Completed the  US 110151: Operate a Working Platform, or US 242272: Operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP)
